Velvet Chokers...for Men

Yes, that is a man wearing a choker, your eyes do not deceive you.

As it was officially declared by Alexa Chung, 'chokers are dead', ASOS have taken no notice of this statement from the fashion icon and given them a new target market. The online site has now ventured into the mens market and created not just one choker for boys but a few. Available in a range of colours, from pink, emerald and black to different materials and prints, such as velvet, bandana and string wrap around - they're meaning business.

They say on their website that 'ASOS Menswear shuts down the new season with the latest trends and the coolest products,' - but we're not quite sure if we agree with chokers for men being a 'cool product.' Who knows we might be seeing men walking around with chokers on soon...Time will only tell if this one takes off.

Designer's refuse to dress the First Lady

It's not long now until Donald Trump takes charge and becomes the 45th President of the United States on January 20th. And along with all the controversary surrounding his appointment, it now appears the drama has managed to turn towards his wife and future First Lady, Melania and the fashion industry.

When the news first came we didn't quite believe it but yes, it's happened and certain designers aren't too happy with the decision and have flat-out refused to dress the next First Lady, whilst others are undecided on the whole matter.

French-born designer Sophie Theallet started it all when she penned an open letter on November 17th saying she would not be participating 'in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady', as 'the rhetoric of racism, sexism and xenophobia unleashed by her husband's presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared value we live by' and she 'encourages' her fellow designers to do the same.

Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and Phillip Lim are just a few others who have stood by Theallet and said they will also not be dressing the First Lady because they have 'no interest whatsoever' in creating any sort of relationship with either of the Trumps.

But it's not all bad news for Mrs. Trump. Other designers see that this could be a great opportunity for not just their brand but also American manufacturing. Diane von Furstenberg has said that 'the fashion industry is to promote beauty, inclusiveness and diversity,' which is something they are always trying to promote and so would be up for the challenge.

There's not really a right or wrong move in this case. You can't blame or look down upon anyone and their decisions. You either think about your personal political beliefs and loyalites or you put your brand first. Only time will tell on how everyone reacts to the Trump's in office and it'll sure be interesting to see how everything unfolds.

2017 Trends

As we say goodbye to 2016 and all the fashion trends that we've been wearing for the past twelve months, here's what to expect within the fashion world in 2017..

Pink is the new camel

2016 saw monochromatic dressing take off to another level, with camel combinations being the favourite. But now it's time to opt for something a little bit more fun. This year it's time to think pink, and don joyous shades of pink whenever you can. Think Valentino, FENYY X PUMA, Balenciaga and Céline.

Raf Simons is Calvin Klein

Probably one of the best appointments to be ever made within the fashion industry. His first American venture, it'll be the hot ticket when fashion month kicks off in February and one we cannot wait to see.

Statement Earrings

After making their 'debut' at Céline AW14 show, the trend has only got bigger and better... quite literally. Take Fashion East (left) and House of Holland (right) for inspiration. It doesn't matter how heavy they might feel, they sure will look good.

Phone cases = the new 'it' bag

Phone cases can say a lot. It can be seen as expression of your identity, and big name designers have finally payed attention to the popularity of cases. Kitschy cases from Moschino have been around for some time and the front-runner for designer cases. But this year you can get your hands on Louis Vuitton's own monogrammed case, which is the only accessory you need.

Move over logos, it's time for the slogan

Designers have become less focused on themselves and more about getting messages out. With the arrival of Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior, she opted for Chimamanda Ngozi Adichia's phrase we should all be feminists - which guaranteed will be the go-to t-shirt of the season.

And finally... Crocs

Now, we're not quite sure how this will do within the industry and within high street adopters. For Christopher Kane's tenth year in fashion he brought us the 'new Birkenstock'... the bejazzled Croc. There's not much else to say on this one, other than we'll just put a question mark against this one.

NYE Kiss Tradition

It's all anyone wants to know and the question on everyones lips.. who will you be kissing at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve?

For some, it's the highlight of their night, or even their year and it's all real thought out moment. Whereas for others, they're just there to have fun and drink as much as possible. But why has this become such a big thing? Does it date back to ancient traditions, or has it become some sort of marketing tool during the festive period?

Well, here's your answer...

It all started with the Ancient Romans. During the end of December, they would celebrate the winter solstice by throwing extravagant parties for the Festival of Saturnalia, and part of this was to kiss your nearest and dearest as much as possible.

Then from there, the tradition travelled to the Middle Ages in Europe, specifically Germany and England. It was believed that the first person you saw at the very start of the year, would set the tone for the next twelve months - so, to be safe they would keep loved ones close by when the countdown begun.

The Europeans also would hold masked balls to celebrate the New Year. The masks were thought to symbolise evil spirits from the previous year and the kiss at midnight - and removing the mask - is seen as an act of purification.

And that's not the only superstition. Some believe that kissing loved ones will strengthen the bonds of your relationship for the year to come. Whereas, others, see that if you don't lock lips with someone or even your partner, then you could be in for a year of 'coldness' and 'loneliness'.

Further popularised by the silver screen and the media, it would seem that people began to become set on having someone to kiss on NYE. Films, such as Bridget Jones, where her and Darcy, are brought back together, or classic When Harry Met Sally and New Year's Eve, which is basically all about who to kiss at midnight, have helped to add to the night's expectations. Where realistically, it might not be this great kiss you see in movies, chances are you'll be too tipsy to remember the next day.

But it's still a great tradition and one we shouldn't lose.

Happy New Year

From all of us at Fittings Division, we hope you had a wonderful New Year's Eve and here's to the New Year...

...Hello 2017!
