The Helix Tattoo

The tattoo trend you're about to see everywhere...

Introducing the helix tattoo. A new alternative to the behind-the-ear tat that many people see as the go-to. No longer will you be needing earrings, when you can just have them permanently drawn on.

Delicate floral designs to minimalist lines that perfectly resemble earrings are fast becoming the next big thing.

If you're thinking that this is right up your street and already picking out designs, you might want to think again.

According to Joel Tron, Australian-based piercer and owner of Stone Heart Body Art in Sydney, when it comes to the design, it should be kept simple as they are prone to leaking and bleeding.

"Specifically, in regards to ear tattooing, when you inject the ink using a needle into tissue that's so thin, with very little dermis for the ink to reside in, what can often happen is the ink will just blow out," Tron told Elle Australia. "So you'll see a lot of ear cartilage tattoos that look good for the first three to six months, but just like wet paper with ink they slowly leak and bleed at the seams, and then the design quite often looks more like a blur that it does a picture."

If you're loving this but not committed to actually inking yourself, you could always grab your trusty liquid eyeliner and get creative. It'll cost you nothing and you can wipe it off if it's not your thing.
